New York Fashion Week Hair Tutorial: The Braided Bun

You may have to wait until next season to sport the fashions seen at New York Fashion Week, but you can start styling your hair now with some of the hottest hair trends seen on the runway. Braids are all the rage this spring, and we’re loving the braided bun rendition seen at the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2012 show. Redken’s Creative Consultant, Guido Palau, created a side braided bun and split braided buns for the Marc Jacobs show. While Palau says the look is perfect for sporting with a cute winter hat, we think it’s playful enough to start wearing now, or perhaps to wear under a fun summer hat! Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to create the braided bun look.

1. Start with clean hair that’s been dried straight and has no product in it. Create a part down the center of your head, starting from the forehead through to the nape of your neck as if you were creating a part for pigtails.

2. Next, create two low side pigtails and use an elastic to hold them in. Braid each pigtail and when you’re done, wrap it around the elastic so it creates a knot.

3. Use bobby pins to hold the braids in place and repeat the braid and knot step for your other pigtail.

4. Finally, use stronghold finishing spray to prevent any flyaways!

For a variation on the look above, try a single-braided side bun. Start by pulling out a thin layer of hair in the front to expose your bangs. Then, repeat the steps above to create your braided bun look.

Whether you’re a fan of the double buns or the single braided bun, have fun experimenting with this hair tutorial! Try an off-center part or playing with different exposed pieces of hair in the front to create a new hairstyle unique to you.
